Audi debuted the first-generation A4 (known internally as the Typ 8D) in 1994 on the Volkswagen B5 platform, which it shared with the fourth generation Volkswagen Passat. It had a longitudinal engine and standard front-wheel drive, although many of the A4 owners selected the optional quattro® four-wheel drive system. The A4 was initially introduced as a four-door saloon; the Avant estate arrived a year later.

The Audi A4 was the first model in the Volkswagen Group to feature the new 1.8 L 20V motor with five valves per cylinder, based on the unit Audi Sport had developed for their Supertouring race car. A turbocharged version produced 150 PS (110 kW) and 210 Nm (155 lb.ft.) of torque. This technology was added to the V6 family in 1996, starting with the 2.8 L V6 30V, which now produced 193 PS (142 kW).

All APR chip upgrades use encryption, which serve several purposes. Mainly, it keeps prying eyes out of our software and prevents lesser companies from copying the chip and degrading the product. Also, all APR software is undetectable to a dealers VAG diagnostic tool.

EMCS is available for this car. EMCS is APR's revolutionary patent pending Enhanced Modular Chipping System. EMCS is an industry leading technology that brings many new features to the automotive enthusiast. This technology was developed exclusively by Audi Performance & Racing, LLC and demonstrates APR's continued commitment to lead the industry with the most technologically advanced products available.

Want chipped mode? Want to be able to switch back to your stock settings? Want a race mode to run 100 octane fuel at the track? How about a valet mode that limits power? EMCS is the lone technology on the market that can give you all of these options. No changing of the chip or ECU is required. These programs are available at the touch of a button.

APR has taken your cruise control buttons and utilized them for this function. Your cruise control will continue to function as normal, but will give you the ability to scroll through the programs you have purchased on your APR chipped ECU. The procedure is simple and involves only two steps.

Step 1: Press and hold the "set" button on your cruise control. After approximately five seconds, the "check engine" light on your dash will begin to blink once per second. This will tell you that you are activating program one. This blinking sequence will continue for approximately five seconds.

After this five second interval, the "check engine" light will begin blinking twice per second. This will indicate that you have activated the second program. This process is continued to access any remaining programs you may have purchased. (three blinks = program three, four blinks = program four).

Step 2: Once you have activated the desired program, simply release the "set" button. The "check engine" light will go off, and you will be locked in that program until you change it.

It's that simple.

APR's EMCS is a truly modular system that allows for future enhancements and features to be added as they are developed without the need for additional hardware. EMCS makes the following advanced features possible:

FlipSwitch
Enables you to swap between two or more engine programs on-the-fly using the cruise control stalk. All cars have stock and standard chipped program versions available. Valet, race-gas, and other specialty programs are available for some models.

Fault Code Erase/Throttle Body Alignment (FCE/TBA)
Fault Code Erase allows you to erase and reset engine related trouble codes without having to use a specialty tool. Throttle Body Alignment allows you to manually perform throttle-body adaptation.

Security Lockout
Prevents unauthorized personnel from accessing EMCS functions. The user may select any 1 to 4 digit security code. The security code is entered using the cruise control buttons.

User Reprogramming and Reconfiguration
Gives the user the ability to reprogram their ECU with the latest software updates and to reconfigure their ECU for different preferences or features. This function requires the optional programming adaptor.

APR's A4 Exhaust is a stainless steel, 2.5" mandrel bent, cat-back exhaust. On an A4, the catalytic converter is bolted to the turbocharger and then the exhaust begins with the downpipe. Unlike most other aftermarket exhausts, the APR exhaust includes a downpipe. This exhaust is very quiet and simply changes the tone of the exhaust to a deep, unobtrusive sound. With TIG welding, fully stainless construction, and CNC'ed hangers, you will not find a higher quality system on the market.

APR is please to present our front mounted intercooler for the A4 1.8T. The construction and advanced design techniques used in the APR intercooler sets ours apart from all the others on the market. Utilizing such technologies as a top-bottom feed core, custom mandrel bent plumbing, and innovative cast endtanks with internal vaning, our intercooler has produced excellent results in testing.

The conditions of one test that was performed is as follows: at 20 psi of pressure with a vehicle speed of 70 mph, and an elevation of approximately 500 feet above sea level. Under these conditions the internal flow was measured at 720cfm. Also at those conditions, with an input temp of 240 degrees F, the intercooler was quite effective; cooling the output air to 126 degrees F. While doing this, the intercooler measured a pressure drop of only .58 psi.

Equally as impressive with the APR intercooler was the external pressure drop (the amount of air pressure behind the intercooler) of only 1.01 psi. This helps to allow airflow to other critical parts of the car such as the radiator and A/C condenser. While the internal pressure drop is important, the external pressure drop is often overlooked. Most other intercoolers commonly cause 1.5 to 2.0 pounds of pressure drop, hindering the radiator from effectively doing its job of cooling the engine.

The most important part of the Stage III kit is the exhaust manifold. APR has spent enormous time and resources developing the turbo manifold. The exhaust manifold has been designed in Pro/Engineer 20, a 3-D modeling package and validated extensively on the computer using Exa Powerflow, a CFD analysis program. By performing a computational fluid dynamics analysis, we were able to study exhaust flow, pressure drops, and fluid flow through the exhaust manifold. Multiple computer simulations were done to prove the design before we even had a physical manifold in our hand.

Once the manifold was fully passed on the computer we had the exhaust manifold CAD file transferred to a rapid prototyping machine. A polycarbonate exhaust manifold was cast from the prototyping machine. With this plastic manifold we were able to mock everything up in the test vehicle before proceeding to the next process.

From the polycarbonate piece we were able to cast a metal piece for prototyping. The metal used for the prototype and the production manifold is Inconel 625. Inconel is a very high quality (yet expensive and difficult to machine) metal that is used extensively in the racing and aeronautical industry (Audi Sport sells an Inconel exhaust manifold for $10,000). Inconel has excellent heat retention characteristics that work to enhance turbo response by keeping exhaust velocities high. We guarantee that this manifold will never crack. Furthermore, the production manifold is cast using a lost-wax process versus a traditional sand-casting process. This process is more expensive but gives a much higher quality part with better tolerances, no parting lines, and a smoother surface finish (the internal surfaces feel like they have been Extrude Honed).

The exhaust manifold is mated to a Garrett turbocharger that replaces the stock Triple K K03 turbocharger. We chose to use a Garrett turbocharger in lieu of a Triple K unit for several reasons. First of all, the new Garrett GT-Series is a more efficient design than the old Triple K K-24 turbocharger used by one of our competitors (the K-24's design dates back to the mid 70's). The Garrett turbocharger we have selected is a 1990's design. Also, Garrett turbochargers are available in a wider variety of configurations than the Triple K line, which allowed us to find a more exact match. The stock injectors are maxed out at power levels much over 220HP and consequently the fuel injectors have been replaced by larger units. Dialing in the injectors required many hours on the chassis dynamometer to achieve the proper fuel mixture throughout the entire rpm range.

After extensive testing our engineers have found that the OEM throttle body hose is not rigid enough to prevent flex during high boost situations where getting airflow to the motor is most important. A flexed hose like the factory one creates delayed throttle response and pressure drop.

The APR R1 diverter valve was designed to be the ultimate solution to the problem of unreliable factory and aftermarket diverter valves and to be the leader in performance. Although most are of good design, factory diverter valves are built in a very conscious manner and the materials and overall life and reliability suffer. For the performance enthusiast, the diverter valve is an important component whose proper operation is paramount to optimal engine operation.

Enter the R1: APR’s R1 diverter valve addresses all of the reliability problems of the factory-supplied diverter valves and aftermarket replacements and takes performance to the next level. The R1 is a diaphragm-based valve. A diaphragm is the best option for a diverter valve for several reasons. First off, a diaphragm has negligible friction. Piston-based valves have considerable friction from the piston, o-ring, and bore assembly. The lower friction R1 diaphragm equates to faster response and better overall performance. Secondly, diaphragms do not require the periodic greasing that piston-based valves do. Piston-based valves must be qreased periodically (usually every year or sooner), requiring removing the valve from the car, disassembling and reassembling the valve. The APR R1 was designed to be maintenance free for the life of the product. Thirdly, a diaphragm based valve will never have a stuck piston. Piston-based valves periodically incur stuck pistons (especially if the required maintenance schedules are not followed.) Due to the lack of a piston, the APR R1 solves this problem.

The R1 is designed for optimal performance. The main body of the valve is investment cast in an aluminum alloy. By utilizing this casting process in lieu of a more conventional machining process, APR was able to optimize the internal geometry of the valve to provide the ultimate in flow performance. This geometry cannot be created utilizing conventional machining. As such, the APR R1 has much better flow characteristics than other diverter valves. Combined with the low friction diaphragm assembly, this equates to a valve that is truly a performance leader.

The materials used in the R1 are standard setting. The diaphragm is created out of high temperature material and incorporates a Nomex fabric reinforcement layer for enhanced durability and a diaphragm that will never tear. The alloy main body is finish machined at APR and receives a multilayer corrosion resistant and cosmetic enhancing finish. All machining and final assembly takes place at APR headquarters in the United States for optimal quality control and consistency.

The APR Boost Gauge utilizes a VDO boost gauge contained in a vent-replacement pod. The pod was designed on the computer with Pro-E for the best in fit and finish and is injection molded in plastic, giving you factory-like look and feel. The gauge itself is a 52mm mechanical VDO gauge giving very accurate and reliable boost and vacuum readings. It reads from 30 in. Hg of vacuum to 25psi of boost. For higher boost systems, a 0-30psi gauge without vacuum reading is available.
